Moore's Cove Falls - One of my favorite short hikes in Pisgah National Forest.
1.4 Mile Round Trip
This hike starts out with a pedestrian bridge that is sturdy and fairly new then you will approach some steps for some the steps are the worst part it gets the heart pumping in a good way nothing too strenuous and continues on through the nice and wide walking path. You will see many different trees, and if you look close enough to the ground you will find some salamanders. Look but please do not move the rocks or the salamanders. Bring a picnic on this hike as you journey to the halfway point you will find a waterfall that many frequent behind (carefully) and have a nice picnic. The waterfall is a free fall of about 50'. Some time in mid to late 2011, the Forest Service improved and rerouted the trail in a few places and had a viewing platform built overlooking the waterfall. You can still get behind the waterfall by going around the deck. There are actually 2 waterfalls here if you are willing to explore a short distance.Be careful the rocks can be very slippery.
WARNING:
DO NOT VENTURE TO THE TOP OF THE WATERFALL IT IS VERY DANGEROUS.
After this tranquil break, you will head right on back.
HELPFUL TIPS:
Wear good shoes, that possibly could get muddy or wet. A hiking stick or walking sticks are great to use. Dress in layers you are in a temperate rain forest so you just never know when it might rain! Do bring a lunch and plenty of water. Use the restroom before you go, and bring a litter bag since their are no garbage cans on this trail. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed. Do not bring a stroller, this is not handicap accessible either.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THIS HIKE:
You can't get lost unless you go off the path, you have a wonderful goal for a halfway point which is the waterfall and prospect of having a possible picnic, and it is just enough time to burn some calories but still fit in some other waterfalls, or activities. Plan on 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on your speed and how long you stay at the waterfall.
